Through a multi-disciplinary approach, Electronic BioSciences (EBS) is developing a wide range of enabling techniques and instrumentation for three key application areas. We are developing methods that promise the potential for a completely new way of sequencing DNA, nanopore sequencing. This revolutionary technology could one day provide a portable system for directly and rapidly analyzing small samples, unlike current techniques that require time-intensive sample amplification procedures before the sequencing can be completed. Furthermore, the exceptional sensitivity offered by EBS systems provides unique capabilities to research the nature of ion channels and other transmembrane proteins, knowledge of which is crucial to understanding the interaction of cells with their environment. In addition, EBS is investigating the capabilities of modified protein pores for the detection of pathogens and chemical agents, with the goal of developing a quick and portable system for field analyses of samples.
